BA Strike Part I almost over
London, England - Today is the last day of the first part of the British Airways Cabin Crew strike, and today is expected to be the busiest day of the strike upto now. Both sides in the dispute have disagreed on the strike's impact - where the union "unite" say only 300 out of 2,200 scheduled to work over the weekend actually turned up, where BA is reporting that 98% of its staff reported in at London´s Gatwick Airport and more than 50% showed up at London Heathrow Airport.
With 140 aircraft parked at Heathrow, British Airways reported that around 60% of its passengers flew on Sunday whether on BA aircraft or on charters bought in to try and releive the impact of the strike action.
The Union and airline have been in negotiations with each other for many months but without ever reaching an amicable agreement. The Cabin crew are striking over staffing and pay changes. They also plan to walk out for four days from 27 March.
The Cabin crew are and union are particularly angry that last November BA reduced the number of crew on long-haul flights and is introducing a 2 year pay freeze from 2010. The airline also proposed new contracts with lower pay for new staff.
Unite says it accepts the need for BA to cut costs but is unhappy at the way in which the changes were brought in.
