Americas Cultural Capital of 2010

folkdanceSanto Domingo - President Leonel Fernández declared on February 16 the Dominican Republic´s capital city of Santo Domingo as "America's Cultural Capital 2010" in a ceremony at the National Palace.

The honor was granted to the Dominican Republic by the International Bureau of Cultural Capitals and is an important opportunity for the country to show the international community's heritage and culture that the first city of the Americas has.

Fernandez stated that he wants to develop a successful program of historical and cultural events from now until 31 December, under the coordination of the Ministry of Culture and the National District City Council.

Culture Minister Jose Rafael Lantigua, announced that around 600 activities will be held throughout 2010, including citing the Second National Theater Festival, Book Fair, the Grand Carnival parades as well as various exhibitions, festivals and the opening of the new National Library and Dominican Museum.

The President of the International Bureau of Cultural Capitals, Xavier Tudela, mentioned that this event gives the Dominican Republic cultural value and significant international presence.
