Last night in Puerto Plata the National Drugs Control Agency siezed over 51 kilos of cocaine which was split into 50 seperate stashes bound for Miami aboard a freighter ship operating under the name of Habib Express. The DNCD also arrested three suspects close to Puerto Plata's wharf included in the three arrests a shipping company's operations supervisor. Loans in the amount of US$111.3 million for the construction of a hydroelectric dam at Palomino in the southwest of the country were last night approved by the Senate.The amount is comprised of two loans. Cap Cana tourist resort group on the east coast will cut the ribbon April 28 on the first stage of their posh new marina. President Leonel Fernandez is scheduled to lead the inauguration ceremonies that are expected to be attended by many special Dominican and foreign guests.In it's initial stages the marina has the capacity to handle 72 yachts of up to 60 feet long. The US$5 'aeronautical fee' that was implemented in 2005 will increase to US$8 as of June 1 2007. This fee is charged to every passenger entering and leaving the Dominican Republic by air, both charter and commercial, and is used to to improve tourism development and remedy infrastructure problems in various resort areas. The Dominican Governments Electricity Company the CDEEE is preparing to sue for the largest outstanding electricity bill in Dominican history!    The culprits of non bill payment are the owners of the exclusive commercial center in Santo Domingo “The Acropolis”.    Exclusive it may be but they still need to pay their electricity! The unpaid amount is in the region of RD$242 million pesos.  The bill is broken down into RD$201.34 million in outstanding electricity and RD$41.10 million pesos for fines…
School is now back in session in the Dominican Republic, however less children/students have registered for this years academic season.  Around 395,069 students in total since 2004, have now graduated from High School after passing the National Exam's competency requirements, according to Education Minister Alejandrina German, and that is what substanciates the drop in numbers she said.
Fuel prices rose again, marking the tenth price increase in the last eleven weeks. This time it is being attributed to a decrease in U.S. oil reserves brought on by tensions with Iran over their controversial nuclear program.Premium gasoline rose by RD$1.90 to RD$153.10 per gallon and regular gasoline went up by RD$1.80 and is now being sold for RD$139.50 per gallon.
