In May, the first shipment of cigars trademarked "Yerevancigar" made in a Dominican cigar factory will be imported into Armenia. Made at Tabacalera la Flor de Santo Domingo, owned by Omar Kanajian, they are produced using high quality local tobacco as well as raw materials from Cuba and Nicaragua. The Mayor of Santo Domingo the Capital of the Dominican Republic has rejected a recommendation of a temporary ban on heavy vehicles travelling along the sea shores front road, The Malecon, due to damage sustained by Hurricane Dean's passing.  Several geologists and geophysicists have visited the sea front and have said that Dean's strong waves have deteriorated it's base and adjacent coral barrier.

Marcio Veloz Maggiolo (see photo) who is considered to be the Dominican Republic's leading living writer, has been nominated as a candidate for the 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature by the Dominican Academy of Language.
