2 fires in Santiago in 2 days cause panic amoung residents
SANTIAGO - At least 6 people were injured by an explosion that occurred in a propane filling station located in the community of El Jobo in Tamboril, causing panic among the people living in the neighborhood. In addition there were three fire fighters from Santiago injured in the fire and they were transferred to the Regional University Hospital Jose Maria Cabral y Baez.
The explosion, followed by a huge fireball lit the sky and could be seen for miles around, happened at the Ana Gas facility which was totally destroyed. During the fire 8 vehicles were destroyed, plus a nearby salami factory.
The fire started at 8.38pm on Tuesday night and was extinguished at around 10.00 pm with the help of 10 fire fighting units from Tamboril, Santiago, Moca, La Vega and other towns. Some witnesses said that the explosion was caused by a gas leak from the cylinder in a vehicle that was being filled up but the chief of the Santiago Fire Department, Colonel Alexis Moscat, said that the real causes are under investigation.
In the same town, a major fire destroyed the Bellón Hardware store on Wednesday evening.
Located on the corner of avenida Bartolomé Colon section Germán Soriano more than 50% of the store was destroyed in the fire the cause of which is still under investigation.
The flames reached upto six homes located in the same block but thankfully there are no reports of injuries.
