2 Aircraft accidents in 2 days
A German flight crew escaped serious injury yesterday after their a cargo plane caught fire and split in half as it landed at Riyadh airport in Saudi Arabia. It is reported that the Lufthansa MD-11 cargo plane was in trouble as it came in to land, an as it landed split in to two pieces and caught fire. The 2 pilots escaped down emergency chutes and were taken to a nearby military hospital where they were treated for minor injuries. Europe's biggest cargo carrier said it was sending a team of experts to Riyadh to help investigate the cause of the crash.
In another incident, 152 people perished in Pakistan when a passenger aircraft crashed into a hill during bad weather. A Civil Aviation Authority official from Pakistan reported that there were 146 passengers and 6 crew members were on the twin-engined A321 Airbus which was en route from Karachi to Islamabad.
An official at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport, where the plane was due to land, reported that many distraught relatives of passengers had gathered, desperate to get information about their loved ones. The cause of this accident is also under investigation
