It appears that certain local news sources jumped the gun when announcing publicly plans to develop a U.S. Naval base on the secluded national park of Saona Island on the south coast of the Dominican Republic. Because Saona Island has always been a protected area, and one of the jewels of the Dominican Republic the news sparked a certain amount of vocal unrest and controversy amongst the local population. After further clarification by Environment Minister Ernesto Reyna, it was revealed that local authorities merely plan to upgrade an existing naval station that was constructed back in the 1960's. The planned re-modelation and construction work will upgrade existing facilities for approximately 12 Dominican military personnel that are stationed there and not US personnel as was originally reported. All in all this is good news for environmentalists who were also informed that international funds would also be made available from Germany, Japan and Taiwan to help improve local environmental conditions. Saona Island is visited by thousands of tourists each year and is famous for is breathtaking powder white sand and beautiful turquoise Caribbean waters as well as an amazing offshore natural swimming pool. If you are heading out to the Dominican Republic, chances are that you will try our wonderful Presidente Beer. A firm favorite amongst locals and visitors alike, Presidente is a light flavorful beer designed specifically to quench any tropical thirst. But as with most things, there is a right way and a wrong way to truly enjoy a Presidente beer. Any self respecting bar tender or beer connoisseur here will tell you that the Dominican Republic's favorite beer is best enjoyed with what is known locally as a "vestida de novia". Roughly translated this means "bridal gown" and refers to the frosted coating a perfectly prepared Presidente beer will "wear" the moment the chilled beer hits the tropical warmth. February is the month of carnival here in the Dominican Republic. Most weekends in major cities throughout the country will host spectacular colorful carnival events leading up to the final celebration of Independence Day in the Dominican Republic on February 27th. Back in the early history of the Dominican Republic, the original inhabitants of Hispaniola, the Taino's, had their own celebrations linked mainly to the seasons and to promote a healthy abundance of crops and also the spirituality of life. Carnival as it is known today initially began shortly after the arrival of Christopher Columbus and evidence of this exists going back to the mid 1500's. Carnival has close ties to the origins of slavery whereby slave owners encouraged slaves to release pent up energy not least as a diversion to distract them from the miserable conditions of their day to day lives.
