Coffee in the Dominican Republic E-mail

Coffee Beans, Dominican RepublicCoffee, java, café, koffee even coffea has to be the most popular drink around the whole world for many people first thing in the morning and if you are lucky enough to be vacationing in the Dominican Republic then your morning taste buds are in for a real treat.  Take a Dominican coffee out for a test drive and find out why it has become such an important commodity here in the Dominican Republic.

Hand Picking Coffee Beans Dominican RepublicDominican coffees are fine examples of the intricate Caribbean coffee taste offering soft balance with a rich undercurrent of acidity; the effect is certainly powerful but with a low tone balanced out by the acidity giving the drinker a deep, sweet and long finishing richness.  Generally coffee from the Dominican Republic is great for roasting dark and developing a sweet hard candy taste without any of the bitterness normally associated with a lot of other dark coffees.

Watering Coffee Beans Dominican RepublicHey, there has been coffee grown in the Dominican Republic for centuries now, with the arrival of the first coffee seeds in 1735 the island of Hispaniola commenced its coffee plantations.  Some of the oldest coffee farms in Latin America can be found in the Dominican Republic with some of the offspring from original plants still growing on the forested slopes.

Santo Domingo Café so named after the countries capital is the most popular coffee in the Dominican Republic and also considered to be one of the best in the Caribbean and Latin America.  Santo Domingo coffee is mild and soft a characteristic associated with Caribbean coffee, it has been described as having a lot of different flavours.  The main flavours linked to the acidity are grapes and apples, but also are hints of vanilla and allspice that lie behind the fruit in the coffee beans.

Sun Drying Coffee Beans Dominican RepublicThere are over 340,000 acres of coffee plants in the Dominican Republic with most of the plantations producing 100% Arabic type, much sought after for in espresso blends of coffee because of its mild soft flavour.  The best Dominican coffee is grown in the regions of Bani and Cibao Altura with most of the coffee being retained in the Dominican Republic to be consumed by its inhabitants.

Dominicans like their coffee strong and black with a huge amount of sugar poured in.  Always ask for your coffee ‘Sin Azucar” or ‘No Sugar’ or else you will be in for a sugar high that will probably last the rest of your vacation time!
