Dominican National Strike Still Scheduled for Next Monday E-mail

Looks like a huge general strike is being planned for next Monday, to demand potable water and also against the now very lengthy blackouts that the whole country seems to be suffering from.  The office spokesperson for the Presidents Press Secretary is calling for a meeting with the “entities” before a strike happens.

Rafael Nunez said that President Leonel Fernandez’s administration is characterized for seeking dialogue and the consensus in all circumstances and that strikes don’t correspond with the times.

He said manifestations must not alter the public order or the free circulation and that the authorities will not repress the organizers because the Government respects people’s rights.

He also added “We are a Government which gas given examples of dialogue and opening, and if they make their strike within the framework of the law, without altering the public order.”

The Alternative Social Forum reiterated its call to strike and said yesterday that the only way for the Government to stop next Mondays protest is by addressing the people’s needs.
