The government of the United States of America has given two super fast launches to the DOminican Navy at a value of US$7.5 million. The launch boats will be used in the future to aid and control illegal trips, terrorism and catching drug smugglers all out in high seas. The Trade Attache for the U.S. Embassy Mr Roland Bullen said that the launch boats could reach speeds pf 60MPH, "making them the fastest boats in the area". As the US Southern Command is currently visiting all Caribbean Islands and waters the donation of the launch boats comes as aprt of Operation Enduring Friendship. The Minister for the DOminican Armed Forces Mr Ramon Aquino Garcia said that he hoped Operation Enduring Friendship would allow for good levels of coordination so that the resources invested would "support our main logistical needs, strengthen our command and control capacity and our response capacity." Just last week the Dominican Navy decomissioned 120kg of cocaine that had been dropped off on Las Calderas beach in the Bani area of the island, they also intercepted a boatload of illegal immigrants in an unfortunate incident where one person was shot dead.
