Yesterday, Sundays “Anti Dengue Campaign” got underway with a staggering amount of volunteers and staff from 157 municipalities all joining forces for this national awareness campaign. Over 200,000 volunteers helped with the organization of the Public Health Ministry and back up by local support from public and private clinics, surgeries and institutions.
The campaign was launched early Saturday morning by the Health Minister Vice President Rafael Alburquerqu and Bautista Rojas Gomez along with Mayor Roberto Salcedo.
One of the objectives was to deliver and distribute over three million posters to the Dominican population about dengue awareness and prevention. Also in addition over 200,000 plastic covers were delivered and handed out to houses where water is stored in open tanks to prevent the dengue mosquitoes breeding inside the tanks.
Each group of people that visited the homes across the country were made up of 7 – 10 members. They shared knowledge prevention, conducted a quick survey about peoples experience and awareness of the disease, located their water tanks and other potential breeding areas and administered chlorine where necessary.
Posters were put up in every house visited and other groups handed out information in public places. Municipal employees worked to clear up garbage areas from streets, avenues, and alleyways to stop breeding dengue mosquitoes, and also assisted supporting the Health Minister Groups of people.
The Mayor of Santo Domingo Roberto Salcedo said that the municipality workers would also be fumigating and giving our information and public education about the disease. |
