In an effort to reduce the amount of traffic accidents and fatalities in the country The Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) is increasing penalties for traffic offences. As of now drivers caught running red lights will not only face a fine but will be detained for six hours. Also, they will be required to attend driver training courses on Saturdays to learn more about traffic laws. Dangerous driving leading to traffic accidents is one of the country's leading causes of death. Approximately 40% of deaths in the Dominican Republic are traffic related.
