In the last twenty four hours 8 micro earthquakes ranging from 0.5 to 3 degrees on the Richter scale have been recorded in the Dominican Republic. 

The tremors reflect the strong seismic activity currently affecting the whole of the country. 

Between the 4^th and 14^th of June at least 4 tremors were felt in the northern region around the Cibao area, figures have been collated at the State University’s Seismologic Institute. 

Specialist Juan Arias said their occurrence isn’t an element to forecast nor discard a large scale one. Arias continued to explain that the frequent movements are “normal” and are just part of the country’s earthquake cycles which are a result from the Earth’s accumulated energy which it releases at any time. 

He also had this to say on the matter “The earth is moving very frequently due to the amount of very active geologic and tectonic faults such as the Northern one, the one of Banao or the one of San Jose de Ocoa (south), and that can be activated at any time of the year”. 

He concluded by saying that the Earth’s constant shaking prevents the possibility of a strong quake but then also added it can be a prelude to one of great magnitude.
