| Boca Chica & Juan Dolio |
|
|
Boca Chica & Juan Dolio are two fantastic holiday destinations within 20 minutes drive from each other are located in the South part of the Dominican Republic. The nearest international airport is Santo Domingo ‘s Las Americas which is only about 15 -25 minutes drive away from Boca Chica and Juan Dolio. Likewise if you are in Santo Domingo and wanted to drive or go by bus to these two areas then the main highway out of Santo Domingo is clearly defined and easy to follow. There are many local buses (gua guas) that will take you here also. Fast becoming renown as another wonderful Caribbean golf Mecca the area attracts many people to relax and enjoy the miles of beaches, water front restaurant, fantastic water sports including diving and it is generally a perfect spot to park yourself from which to visit other local places. There are all inclusive hotels (The Coral Hamaca Beach Hotel, Don Juan Beach Resort, Boca Chica Beach Resort)offering complete packages for great family value and also many bed and breakfasts or pensions available for the independent traveller.(See The Real DR Hotel Directory for more listings). Boca Chica was once a retreat for the elite jet set of Santo Domingo who came here for the weekend to enjoy this coastal towns perfect waters (this has the largest stretch of coral reef in the Caribbean which separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean Sea). Unfortunately due to other resorts building faster Boca Chica has been left a little behind the wayside. However though it does retain its charm and the many typical Dominican houses and shops are still intact and have not yet been replaced by mundane cinder block constructions. The main strip in Boca Chica offers a plethora of restaurants and cafes as well as the usual gift shops expected in any seaside town, with a small and pretty marina and dock area to walk around there are also banks, supermarkets, post office, a Tricot office to make international telephone calls, bus depot and hair and nail salons. Boca Chica certainly comes alive at night with its many bars often playing live music and a huge choice of world wide cuisine. Do watch your purses and wallets as there are a fair amount of prostitutes walking along the main strip at night and will quite aggressively call out for business! Juan Dolio is basically a man made seaside resort beside the ocean. Construction commenced here in the 1980's and a fair amount of all inclusive hotels were built but due to other developing areas becoming more popular ie.,. Playa Dorada in the north or Punta Cana in the east, then a lot of the money pouring into the area stopped and hotels were abandoned or just left to rot away. So be careful where you book your hotel in the Juan Dolio vicinity as once you leave your all inclusive resort there is not a lot of infrastructure and there is no where immediately to go. There is a small strip offering a few shops and places to eat and it is worth noting that the general quality of restaurants are better in Juan Dolio than of those in Boca Chica and it is pretty much a hassle free zone to walk around in, that’s got to be a bonus! Yes the beaches are beautiful with their swaying palm trees and sugar white sands and you can purchase some great day excursions do remember that most of the activities will only be centred around your hotel. However there are some excellent hotel choices offering great accommodation, water sports programmes wonderful beach front restaurants and dining options within the complex’s. The Barcelo chain of hotels has offer some good accommodation but check out the hotel listings in The Real DR directory. ....and an accompanying plethora of shysters and informal "guides" - that it's no longer the best spot along the coast to spend some time, and a major draw these days is prostitution. Sitting on the beach is the main daytime activity, and the waters are low and calm enough for a good swim. Expect a big crowd on weekends. There are several quality restaurants in Boca Chica, but the very best places to eat are the beachside food shacks serving fresh seafood. The bars are all along the main strip, Calle Duarte. D'Lucien Duarte 69. Pricey patio restaurant with views of the promenade and fresh seafood displayed on ice. Portofino Duarte 44. Beachfront pizzeria with great atmosphere. Romagna Mia Duarte 74. Solid Italian fare in a pleasant little courtyard restaurant a block from the beach. The pastas are excellent, but you should treat yourself to the great fresh seafood.
