Dominican Republic Expects to Double Cocoa Exports |
|
|
While the Dominican Republic is currently the second largest organic cocoa exporter in the Americas and eighth overall in the world, the country is hoping to improve those standings by doubling exports of these beans from 8600 tons last year to 17,000 tons this year. According to Salcedo province native, agronomist and former Vice-President Jaime David Fernandez, that province is currently undertaking a 'cloning' project that should triple yields and that cooperatives are being formed in the region to improve marketing of the crops. This northeastern province is the country's largest producer of cocoa. The Domincan Republic is also expected to be admitted as an exporter of fine and aromatic cocoa during the January 21, 2008 meeting of the International Cocoa Organization. On July 19, 2006 cocoa closed on the Liffe exchange in London at £864 per metric ton.
