The US$5 'aeronautical fee' that was implemented in 2005 will increase to US$8 as of June 1 2007. This fee is charged to every passenger entering and leaving the Dominican Republic by air, both charter and commercial, and is used to to improve tourism development and remedy infrastructure problems in various resort areas. Originally opposed by the National Hotels and Restaurants Association (Asonahores), the increase is now in consensus with the hoteliers who found that the fee did not affect the number of visitors to the country and, in fact, the money was used to help fix problems in the tourism sector. Since 2005 US$21.8 million has been collected through the levy. Of the US$8 fee, US$3 will be allocated to the promotion of the Dominican Republic's tourism image, US$4 will be used by the Tourism Zones Infrastructure Executor Committe and US$1 will go towards advertising abroad. Also increasing is the aeronautical services and airport fee. The fee increases from US$12.50 to US$13.75 for every arriving and departing passenger, with all airlines using international airports now paying the same rate. This fee is divided between the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (US$11.25)and the airport terminals (US$2.50). The funds are used for airport services and equipment, Dominican Civil Aviation Institute operations, the Specialized Airport Security Corps and the Dominican Air Force.
