RD$2 Billion in Social Works Projects for Dominican-Haitian Border |
|
|
Communities along the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti will benefit from RD$2 billion in assistance from the Office of the National Coordinator for the European Development Fund (ONFED). The money will be disbursed in areas along the border that are hardest hit by extreme poverty. Recipients include the northwestern provinces of Montecristi, Dajabón and Santiago Rodriguez and Independencia, Pedernales, Elías Piña, San Juan, Bahoruco and Barahona along the southwestern border. According to ONFED, the European Union contributes the money but representatives of the Government select locations and decide on projects based on requests from the communities. It is hoped that the projects developed by the funds will have a positive social impact and foster a sense of citizenship.
