A Gallup survey orderd by Latin American Public Opinion (Lapop) has shown the Dominican Republic to be one of the Latin American countries to have advanced the most in the areas of democracy and governance in the past few years.

At a press conference held in Santo Domingo by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Social Governance Centre of Santo Domingo Technological Institute (Intec) the survey's results were presented by Temple University sociologist Rosario Espinal and USAID official Stephen Brager.

1519 people were surveyed throughout the country from June 1 to 22, 2006. The survey also showed that the growing Dominican population feels democracy is the best form of government and that education is key to develop any country.
