Eddy Martinez, head of the Export and Investment Centre (CEI-RD) has announced that by the end of the year the Dominican Republic will see the opening of two U.S. supermarkets. While no names are being released it is well-known that Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Target, Sears and JC Penny are all looking into potential investment in the Dominican Republic to take advantage of opportunities provided by the signing of DR-CAFTA. Martinez feels the introduction of the U.S. stores will be beneficial to the country in terms of increasing competitiveness, providing job opportunities, increased demand for products and generating greater wealth. He also went on to say that an increase is being seen in tourism investment, particularly as it relates to real estate and construction of tourism complexes.
