An agreement to intensify and diversify the search for intra-regional cooperation channels to fight drug trafficking is how the first summit on Drugs, Security and Cooperation wrapped up yesterday. The heads of the participating countries signed the Santo Domingo Declaration committing themselves to giving more attention and resources to the problem, including attacking cocaine plantations and industrial processing points. They also called on the international community to help support the fight with technical and financial assistance with Dominican President Leonel Fernández appealing to the international community to help the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Colombia and Trinidad and Tobago in the acquisition of planes, boats and radar equipment needed to confront the drug trade more effectively. In the closing ceremony he said they are not asking for donations or something for nothing but argued that the drug trade is a threat to democracy and social justice in all nations.
