Foreign Students Make Economic Impact E-mail

Foreign students coming to the Dominican Republic to pursue an education in medicine, engineering, languages, dentistry or business now contribute almost as much to the economy as tobacco products, coffee and cacao exports.

In a study done by the Central Bank's research department it was found that foreign students spent as much as US$70 million in 2006, up from US$66 million in 2005. Of the twenty-nine different nationalities attending universities in the Dominican Republic, the largest number of foreign students are Haitians who are allowed to register the same as Dominicans and are not required to pay the foreign student premium.
