San Pedro de Marcoris To Get Eco-Friendly Airport E-mail

The Cave of Wonders Foundation and Baylor University have signed an agreement allowing for the creation of a green airport in San Pedro de Marcoris at a cost of between US$5 million and US$6 million. Solar and wind generated power are to be used to supply electrical needs with aircraft being fuelled by ethanol. With a landing strip of 2000-2500 metres, The Cave of Wonders Airport will be able to handle up to 30 flights a day. Also planned are flight training and academic programs at the site.

The idea of using ethanol as the primary fuel for aircraft follows the lead of Brazil where nearly a thousand aircraft, used in agricultural work, run on ethanol-consuming engines. Former science and technology assistant to the Secretary General of the United Nations and ethanol expert Sergio Trindade commented on the great potential of the Dominican Republic as a ethanol producer resulting in a reduction of rural-urban migration.
