Mount Isabel de Torres To Get A Facelift On North Dominican Coast E-mail
Max Puig the Environment Minister for the Dominican Republic announced the launch of a clean up and restoration programme for Puerto Plata's largest natural landmark, Mount Isable de Torres.

The Minister confirmed that already two technical teams were carrying out a study and collecting information in preparation for the project which is aimed at restoring the monument back to it's former glory as a national and international tourist attraction.

The mountain had deteriorated over past years due to unauthorised construction inside the national parks limits which in turn is threatening it's integrity as a projected area.

Max Puig added "The Mount Isabel de Torres natural monument is under threat from several quarters, especiallly human incursions and this is why the technical team is working with the entire geographical and geo-referential system to make recommendations for controlling this and making the area fit for tourists, with footpaths."

During a meeting with the Puerto Plata Development Committee Max Puig projected his comments.  The meeting was organised by the American Chamber of Commerce.  The subject of the whole of the meeting was about Sustainable Tourism in Puerto Plata.

He also added and highlighted the potential for sustainable tourism within the province of Puerto Plata, mentioning that as well as Mount Isable de Torres, Puerto Plata also contained other attractions like the Damajagua Falls which need to be protected. He warned about the threats to the future of tourism in the region from marine and wetlands pollution, the destruction of mangroves and uncontrolled construction on coastal and riverbank areas.

Mr Puig continued to state that the Puerto Plata tourist sector urgently needed an enviromental impact study and monitoring system in order to guarantee good quality tourism development.
