| Liquor Curfew Continues |
|
|
The new midnight liquor curfew continues bringing many complaints from establishments through out the country. The curfew was put in place last week to assist in combating the recent crimes spate that has spread through out the nation. With extra police and military now pratrolling the streets at night anyone found wandering around will be subject to questionning by the security forces. Representatives from bars, discos, colmado's, restaurants, car washes and even popular music bands wishing to play are complaining that they are literally being put out of business. The curfew is exteneded to 2.00am on weekends. During the first week of curfew restaurants were ordered to be closed after midnight regardless. The goverment for the first time is now taking serious measures in reacting to the increase of crime and violence to hit the streets of the Dom Rep. The national newspaper El Caribe has called the militarization of the city streets after midnight counterproductive and spectacular. The newspaper suggested that the military were only carrying out their registrations when suspicious situations were detected. On record to date the Chief of Police Bernado Santana has said that their are 1,119 persons registered of which 206 were arrested for further questioning on the first two evenings of curfew, last Wednesday and Thursday. Drivers are being stopped too after midnight on the roads and so far the military corps have retained 79 vehicles and 47 RX 115 motorcylces due to the drivers failing to present the correct ownership papers and documents.
