Dominican Republic Windsurfing |
|
During my search I found information about wind surfing which is another sport popular here in the Dominican Republic and the Cabarete area. Windsurfing is the most amazing of sports. It combines the thrills of surfing and the tranquility of sailing. You can watch with relative amusement as people trying the sport for the first time set the sail at the proper angle, clamber onto their board then try to hoist the sail out of the water. When they finally get the thing up in place they stand there waiting for some wind to catch the sail. Often it comes and they are not prepared for it. They topple into the sea and have to paddle back to shore and start all over again. But once they get the hang of the thing they are off like a shot headed for the horizon and the open sea. It is a sport that you can go off on your own for some peace of mind where the only sounds are those of the wind in the sail and the board skimming the surface of the ocean, or sail with other windsurfers for the fun of shared pleasure and perhaps a little competition or so I have been told by practitioners of the sport. Few other sports can give you the unbeatable feeling of being out in the open in control of your destiny, gliding effortlessly over beautiful clear waters. It's a sport where you can cross great expanses in relatively short time periods and they do. I watch the sails fly across the horizon at incredible speeds easily keeping pace with sailboats. I sometime wonder if they ever return to the shore after having been out there in absolute peace and quiet communing with nature as few of us have the chance to do. Then my eyes wander back closer to shore and I see the lone surfer stretched across his or her board paddling against the current out to catch a wave....
