Weekend "Cafe" Treat Dominican Style! E-mail

cafe, coffee dominican republicServe up this weekend a coffee speciality Dominican Republic style and treat your family and friends to a Caribbean Cafe whether it kick starts your Sunday morning or you save it for an after dinner Saturday night sip and watch the sun go down, it is sure to please! Coffee has been grown in the Dominican Republic for centuries click here for more coffee information, and this drink also includes another integral part of island life here in the DR - RUM!  Our advice from therealdr.com cocina de café (coffee kitchen) is to buy a mature and aged rum, something like an Anejo or Extra Viejo which should be a staple in many Caribbean Cook’s homes.

Grab these few ingredients, put on the coffee Greca and pour yourself a rum anyway, just to make sure it hasn’t aged too much since the last time you tried it!

dominican coffee greca dominican republicA Dominican coffee Greca is an aluminum coffee pot which comes in two parts, bottom half is filled with cold water, a fine metal filter is rested on top, you simply put your delicious ground Dominican coffee in here and screw the other half back on top.  This is the spout, steamer part where the steamed and pressured coffee will gather and be waiting for you.

Recipe!

2 oz (good slug)  of Brugal, Bermudez or Barcelo Old Rum
Hot Coffee
Whipped cream or heavy pouring cream
Almond Flakes

Method !

Grab some tall glasses, preferably Irish whisky glasses if you have them or if not wrap a serviette around the bottom of the glass.
Make your coffee in your Greca or coffee machine.
Pour in a good slug of rum.
When coffee is ready pour on top of rum about two thirds way full.
Add whipped cream on top and a sprinkle of almond flakes.

What to do next !

Switch off lights and fire up some candles. Find a comfortable and pleasant place to sit and watch the sun go down.  Recommended places are on the beach, in your garden or simply in your favourite armchair, good company is an added bonus or maybe just you and a four legged friend is always a great alternative! Watch you don’t choke on the almond flakes now as it’s going to be darkish, however bearing this in mind, sit back and enjoy the delicious taste of island life right there in your fingertips!

Some people just are addicted to coffee!!!
