Tornado Hits the Dominican Republic's Central Region |
|
|
The quiet peace of Sunday afternoon was shattered yesterday when a tornado swept through the Dominican Republic in the central Cibao part of the country. The Cibao Valley region includes Santiago, La Vega and San Pedro de Macoris. Although severe winds and heavy rains were felt in other parts of the country, the Cibao region was worst hit. Over 140 homes destroyed, one person dead, 18 injured and crop fields and plantations destroyed. Yesterday the tornado left parts of this area without lights bringing down power cables. Work is scheduled to start today repairing homes and officials will be in the field to ascertain the full extent of crop damage.
