Weather for Tuesday March 6 to Sunday March 11 E-mail

Let’s face it – the only thing predictable about tropical weather is its unpredictability! Anyway, here’s our attempt at forecasting the weather for the coming week – use at your own risk.

Tuesday 6th – A good day for all you beach bums. Lots of sun with a few clouds mixed in for a bit of variety and a high of 87F. A ‘stray’ shower or thunderstorm could try to find a good home here but you can always take shelter in the nearest beach bar! Tonight it will be partly to mostly cloudy but it’ll be dark so you won’t notice. Low of 69F. A 30% chance of rain – hopefully the 30% part of your day that you are safely tucked away in your bed – you are getting your eight hours every night, right?!?

Wednesday 7th – A “take the umbrella?” , “don’t take the umbrella?” kind of day. In other words, variable clouds with a chance of showers. But with a high of  86F you can always conserve water and dance around in the rain – don’t forget your shampoo! Partly cloudy tonight with a low of 69F – lovely for sleeping.

Thursday 8th – Maybe not a great day to hang out the laundry. Partly cloudy with that stray thunderstorm still looking for a home. But with a high of 88F probably still a good day to go to the beach and find that little beach bar you took cover in on Tuesday.  Déjà vu – tonight’s low will yet again be 69F!

Friday 9th – Yet again we have the chance of scattered showers – okay, maybe we’re just covering our butts with this but at least we can always say “we told you so”! High of 88F but tune up the AC ‘cause it’s only going down to 70F tonight.

Saturday 10th – Okay it’s the weekend so we’ll give you a break and go with just partly cloudy. Hey, you have to have something other than that cold Presidente to look forward to! Your daytime high will be a very comfortable 86F with a nighttime low of 71F – hope that AC is working!

Sunday 11th – The crystal ball is getting  a little hazy at this point so we’re going to go with scattered showers again. A little on the chilly side with the high only reaching 84F – still no cause to get out the woolies! Tonight’s low will be about 70F.

Have a great week whatever the weather and remember – at least it ain’t snowing!!!

Total Eclipse of the Moon Awes the Country E-mail

People throughout the Dominican Republic gazed upward Saturday night to witness a stunning total lunar eclipse. This phenomenon hasn't occurred in almost three years but it was worth the wait.

Commencing at 6:35pm Dominican time the spectacle took almost 6 hours during which time the moon first darkened and then turned red. As the eclipse progressed the moon then took on tones of grey and orange. It was visible in one form or another from all parts of the world.

A lunar eclipse happens when the earth passes between the moon and the sun. The rarity of the event is due to the fact that usually the moon is above the earth's orbit. The red appearance of the moon is due to the refraction of the sun's light through the earth's atmosphere before it reaches the moon.

Science aside, we think we now know the reason for a lot of strange behaviour in the Dominican Republic lately. Let's just hope it was a once in a 'red' moon thing!

Rate of Foreign Investment Expected to Increase E-mail

With the recent signing of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States, minister of Industry and Commerce, Francisco Javier Garcia predicts that foreign investment will increase to a rate not seen in the last 50 years. He said that a number of large foreign companies were only waiting for the Dominican Republic to enter into Free Trade before investing and that these new investments will not only improve the economy but provide thousands of new jobs.

The minister expects the investments to begin in the next few weeks stating that they "will develop complete areas of our country seeking to use the United States as the supply center, but basically as local investments and productions."

He also expects "pleasant surprises" in terms of large investments benefitting areas throughout the country and not limited to the Dominican capital and is optimistically predicting that we will see the drop in prices of a large number of products in the near future.

Incredible Potential for Dominican Republic to Create Renewable Energy E-mail

At a breakfast hosted by the European Chambers of Commerce Federation, Wartsila and the Dominican-Ireland Chamber of Commerce, Markku Nurmi, head of Finland's Environment Ministry noted the incredible potential of the Dominican Republic to implement renewable energy systems. The country would have the use of clean, renewable energy and technologies, provide more accessible power to the poor, be able to combat climatic changes and contribute to the integration process of Central America by implementing these types of projects.

"To obtain it a demonstrative pilot project must be taken into account and the removal of the legal and institutional barriers," he said.
