Today the Chamber of Deputies decided not to vote on a bill to recognise the outgoing United States ambassador Hans Hertell. Reason being that Congess felt he acted more as a businessman than as an ambassador. Ricardo Taveras of the FNP, government allied party added that Hans Hertell is also being investigated by the US State Department. Opposition party deputy Mr Jose Gonzalez cautioned that it is not Congress that should recognise his work as an ambassador but that the Foreign Relations Ministry should instead. The proposal was submitted by the opposition PRD deputy Julio Romero who actually after making his statement drew "boos" from his colleagues whom he accused of being petty for refusing to debate the motion to recognise a representative of the government with whom he said we maintain our main trade relations with and from which we obtain a series of assistance in diverse orders. As things were getting alittle heated to say the least, Chamber of Deputies president Julio Cesar Valentin decided to try and placate everyone, so he suggested that the Chamber leaves the proposed recognition "on the table" for the time being, which as we all know really means that that is where it will stay gathering dust from now to eternity! |

On record the first three months of this year compared to the same months in 2006 has seen a 33% drop in crime, as reported by the Dominican government. The figures also tally with a drop in major headlines in the Dominican press. A meeting held yesterday at the National Palace with President Leonel Fernandez and the heads of the Citizen Sercurity Council all agreed to continue applying measures to assure the protection of the Dominican public and to continue to fight crime. They also discussed measures aimed at reducing levels of violence in the country within the Democratic Security Plan. Interior and Police minister Franklin Almeyda along with the Justice minister Radhames Jimenez affirmed that the program will be reinforced in the measure that due circumstances require. Jimenez also said that "We are experiencing great successes as in the first quarter in 2007 we have had a drop in the cases of homicides by more than 33%, which is a positive sign with relation to year 2006". Mr Almeyda said that there is more stability and progress in the sectors where the Safe Barrio Program has been implemented. The Interior and Police minister said that the mass media play an important role in the security of the population in all its aspects. |

Dengue if you didn't know is a disease brought by the common mosquito. To read more in depth about dengue, hop onto this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dengue_fever Due to the highly epidemic behavior of dengue and because of the climatological changes the Health Department of the Dominican Republic are asking for an extra RD$50 million more this year to monitor it. Already 3 deaths and more than 1,000 cases have been officially registered so far this year, and people are beginning to doubt the Health Ministers prevention plan against the disease. However the Vice Minister for the Health Department has fired back and said that measures have been in place since January 2007 and Nelson Rodriguez defended their work. The next mission on their plan is to eliminate water deposits where the mosquito will transmit dengue which will eventually reduce the disease's mortality, water elimination will commence on the 17th of April 2007. This of course is hoping that there will be no more torrential rain as seen over the last month in the northern areas of the Dominican Republic. As part of the Health Ministers plan, public awareness needs to be highlighted, along with public and private health personel training and the formation of the Dengue Handling Committee which will consist of grouping dengue patients in the one same area of clinics and hospitals. |
