Fuel prices rose again, marking the tenth price increase in the last eleven weeks. This time it is being attributed to a decrease in U.S. oil reserves brought on by tensions with Iran over their controversial nuclear program. Premium gasoline rose by RD$1.90 to RD$153.10 per gallon and regular gasoline went up by RD$1.80 and is now being sold for RD$139.50 per gallon. Minor relief was felt in the price of diesel fuel which went down by RD$0.20 to RD$105.00 per gallon. Also seeing a small decrease was propane which drop by RD$0.31. Subsidized LPG now sells for RD$46.53 and non-subsidized is now RD$68.29. |

All together now - THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY!!!!! So amigos, did you get enough of the sun this week? Of course you didn't! And that's a good thing because the weekend is shaping up to be a beauty. So pack up the cooler, grab a towel, slather on the sunscreen, throw on your coolest shades and get down to the beach pronto! Both Saturday and Sunday promise sunny skies with only the odd fluffy cloud to cool you down. And you'll need it because highs will be in the upper 80F's but with the increasing humidity it could feel anywhere up to 10 degrees hotter. Lows about 71F. Love to stay and chat but my beach chair awaits! Have a great weekend all! |

Loved by all but particularly Dominican children, Tamaury, the National Aquarium's manatee mascot died at the age of 12 years. While the aquarium is experiencing financial difficulties, director Enrique Pujibet say this had nothing to do with the deterioration of Tamaury's condition. In fact, private institutions collaborated in the care and treatment of the beloved mascot. They began to closely monitor him 3 months ago when spots appeared on his skin and his appetite waned. "We did all that was clinically and humanly correct to save the life of Tamaury," said Pujibet. Tamaury's name was a combination of the names of two Dominican scientists - Tammy Dominguez and Amaury Villalba. They are credited with contributing to the rescue Tamaury twelve years ago when he was just a newborn whose mother had been killed by fishermen. Sadly the scientists were killed while flying in the Dominican southwest as part of their mission to protect these endangered creatures. |

Forecasters think it could possibly be another active hurricane season this year. Hurricane season starts June 1 and ends November 30 with August and September traditionally being the most active months. Preliminary predictions indicated that the U.S., the Caribbean and Mexico could experience seventeen tropical storms and nine hurricanes with five of those hurricanes being of very strong intensity. Last year the Atlantic region was relatively quiet after being hit particularly hard in 2004 and 2005. The El Niño phenomenon was the reason behind this. Unfortunately, the rapid dissipation fo El Niño conditions has led to predictions of a very active season. But, don't panic yet! While it's always wise to be prepared, it's still early days and further refinements in the predictions are expected. |
