A Good Reason To Drink More Beer E-mail

A 20% drop in revenues for the Dominican National Brewery means that there will be no Presidente Latin Music Festival this year, a decision performers and producers are mourning. Many merengue stars, choreographers and impresarios associated with productions in past years feel the popular festival enhances a popular image for the country.

The National Brewery blames not only the fallen revenues but a 30% slump in sales due to new government taxes and new measures limiting the hours of sale of alcohol.

Sosa On His Way To 600 Mark E-mail

In spite of the booing and jeering from Chicago White Sox fans Sammy Sosa slammed a 3-run homer to help his team, the Texas Rangers, to a 8-1 victory last night. The Sox were Sosa's former team. The slugger commented that he'd been warned to expect this reaction from fans on his return to the Windy City and that it was okay with him if that was the way they felt. He was just going to concentrate on what he had to do and do the best he could.

This latest is his 591st career homerun putting him well within reach of obtaining the 600 mark this season.

Presidential Bachata Promised E-mail

A grateful Anthony Santos, bachata heartthrob, has promised to compose a song for President Leonel Fernandez. The promise was made after the government's announcement of street reconstruction in the singer's native Matas de Santa Cruz township.

The committment was made amongst much encouragement from the presence of media and a well timed comment from the Public Works Minister Freddy Perez.

While Santos thanked the President for his gesture during a press conference at the National Palace and guaranteed that his town would return the favour tenfold, Perez took advantage of the emotionally charged moment by commenting "I believe that you're going to have to compose a bachata..." at which point Santos smiled and promised a tune for the Head of State.

Resorts May No Longer Fall Under Alcohol Ban E-mail

Resorts in the Dominican Republic may soon find themselves no longer encompassed by the recent measures implemented by the government limiting the hours of sale of alcoholic beverages. This comes after a confession by President Fernandez that he didn't realize that the resorts would fall under the measures or the negative impact these measures would have on tourism. Currrently, the sale of alcohol is limited to midnight on weekdays and 2am on weekends.

Tourism Minister Felix Jimenez said that some operators bringing tourists to resorts in the Samana province, a fledgling tourism market just starting to take off, had filed complaints about the alcohol ban.

Jimenez commented that tourists don't come here for a church life but rather to "sing, dance and have fun." Further he says the tourism industry needs to be handled differently because it is different.

Also of concern in the Samana area was tourist security. This has been addressed by designating an army general to the area with personnel, vehicles and equipment including a helicopter.
