A startling report out today from The United Nations Agency for Nutrition Assistance has stated that there are over 2 million children in the Dominican Republic suffering from chronic infantile undernourishment. A press conference was held in the local United Nations offices and the World Food Pragramme representative, Pavel Isa, said that 8 out of every 100 children in the Dominican Republic have irreparable retardation because of hunger. Pavel went on to say that authorities hide alot of facts and figures on hunger and undernourishment. Quoting Pavel from the Dominican Today on line newspaper he said "The problem of undernourishment has aggravated in the last years. According to official statistics, after a chronic downward tendency during the 1990's, the present decade reflects an increase of the incidence of chronic undernourishment with 6.1% in 2000 until reaching 7.2% in 2006. This means that between 2004 and 2006 the number of undernourished children grew by some 20,000". If these horrendous statistics do not change then the projected number of undernourished children will grow every year by another 2,500 hungery children. The worst affected areas in the Dominican Republic for starving children are Santo Domingo, San Cristobal, Pedernales, Bahoruco and the Monte Plata Provinces. |
