Taxes Reduced, Health Plan Postponed E-mail

As expected, the President's speech to the nation last night dealt with the issues of the health plan and taxes.

He has announced a postponement of the implementation of the plan until September 1 in order to get more information to the population and eliminate concerns currently swirling around the plan as it exists today. Vice President Rafael Alburquerque will be in charge of the commission that will study the problems with the plan and take whatever measures are required to have it ready for the September 1 implementation.

Tax relief was also on the agenda of last night's speech and the President announced that he is sending three bills to Congress to reduce taxes. The taxes on alcoholic beverages will be reduced to 7.5% from 15% and on cigarettes to 20% from 100%. Income taxes on companies will also be reduced from 29% to 25%. This reduction had originally been planned to occur gradually until 2009 but was accelerated by the President in his new tax bills. There was also mention of an amnesty for taxpayers who haven't payed previous years' taxes.

Dominican Port Security Praised E-mail

The Dominican Republic was commended by the United States on the advances they have made in harbour and marine security. The statement was made by the Director of International Harbour Security Program in the Atlantic, Payton Coleman, during the 3rd Conference on Harbour Security held in Punta Cana.

Coleman also commented that the country's use of the proper mechanisms and procedures since 2004 have resulted in the lifting of sanctions which prevented U.S. ships from freely using Dominican ports. He also urged the country to share their knowledge and accomplishments with other Caribbean nations that may request help in better securing their ports.

Also discussed at the conference were mechanisms for detecting drugs, firearms, contraband and stowaways.

Another Dominican Slugger Edges Towards a Record E-mail

Although greatly overshadowed by Sammy Sosa's run for the 600 homerun milestone, another Dominican player is on his own quest for a record.

Last night Manny Ramirez hit his eighth homerun of the season bringing him to 478 homeruns in his career and only 22 away from the 500 mark. The run not only helped his team the Boston Red Sox beat the Anaheim Angels but tied him with Jim Thorne in 25th place on the all-time homerun list.

Ramirez is considered to be in the running for a spot in the Hall of Fame and hitting the 500 mark would definitely help solidify his position as a candidate.

It is advisable to start looking now for accomodation if you are planning on attending this popular event as it is sure to be well attended. Cabarete offers lots of family activities as well as a vibrant nightlife.

President to Speak Tonight E-mail

President Leonel Fernandez will address the nation tonight in a 9pm speech that will be broadcast on both radio and television.

He is expected to try to clear up the current confusion of the people on the Family Health Insurance Plan and announce a postponement of the implementation of the plan until it can guarantee medical services.

He is also expected to talk about the long anticipated measure to relax taxes on alcohol, cigarettes and other consumer products that have been hard hit by lost sales due to high taxation measures previously implemented. A side effect of that has been a reduction in government tax revenues.
