Back-Packing ? - 2006/09/19 21:40 Hey
Group of 5 girls are coming to the Dominican Republic early next year. We want to be near the whales. Can we back pack there or are there any guest houses/places to stay. We are poor students, you know the usual, just enough money for beer and nuts, so must be low prices as the flights are breaking our poor student loans enough as it is. Thought about February as after reading about most of the humped back whale sites this seems like the best time. If this is very popular do you think places will get very booked up and are there any camp sites available. My mum wants to know if its safe to camp! We are whale freaks and this is pretty much a once in a life time thing for us all. We are planning it in detail so any help any one would be knid enough to share with us all - we would be very grateful.
Thanks everyone

Re:Back-Packing ? - 2006/09/21 23:56 Hey Dixie Chick (s)
What a nice post, in response I know there are many bed and breakfast type accommodations to be found in Las Terrenas (not too far) from your whaley world. You can book them on a nightly basis and usually are pretty basic but adequate.
The whole of that area will get booked up but unless you want to splurge and book a package holiday you are best just trying to email guest houses etc., in advance. Try www.lospinas.com
Samana is your best spot and if you book last minute you could pick up a bargain holiday.
I have to be honest and not recommend back packing naywhere in the DOminican Republic. One you would be pretty hard pressed to find any cmpsites anyway and even if you did I feel it would not be a safe enviroment for 5 girls on their own to be in. OK enough said, hunt around on the net for a cheap hotel and package holiday deal.
Have agreat trip over here

Re:Back-Packing ? - 2006/09/22 12:14 Hi Dixie Chick...by all means you can travel with your backpack which is much easier than bringing suitcases...however no camping. There are no campgrounds anyway and most beaches don't allow it. Samana has many guest houses to chose from for the budget traveller. You can check out a list of them here on the Real DR website. Just click on to DR Hotel Reviews, then click on to Santa Barbara de Samana Small Hotels and Guest Houses. I've stayed many times at the Case de Huespedes Mildana, it's very clean and cheap. However there are a lot of others that are just as good. For the whale watching check out Kim at Whales Samana, she's Canadian and started the whale whatching in Samana and has the best trip. Have fun!
