Nacional Supermarket - Santiago - 2007/01/03 21:09 Hello
We have just been to Nacional Supermarket in Santiago, as we live out in Cofresi and are going "loco" with all the road works that have been going on for ages along the main puerto plata road. We have been queing up to 2 hours to just get into the centre of puerto plata a trip that would normally take us 10 minutes. We decided to turn the car round and go the other way to Santiago and see what was going on there.
After a great journey of 40 minutes max on fairly decent roads we arrived and did our weekly shopping at Nacional Supermarket. What a surprise. Great value (cheaper than puerto plat) more selection, fresher produce and a vast supermarket in general from electric goods, books, home ware and then an abundance of great food. If you have not been there and live on the north coast, please try it. The added benefit is that there is a MacDonalds just 2 seconds away as well so you can get your junk food fix for the week or month and some great shopping to boot. Mucho Fun Day Out!

There is also a Burger King, and a KFC all within walking distance of Nacional Supermarket but MaccyDee's is the nearest!!!!!

Re:Nacional Supermarket - Santiago - 2007/01/09 21:22 Shopping, Shopping you know I would have to put in my two pennys worth - try Las Sirenis as well in Santiago. There are 2 of them and they are massive supermarkets as well. Both also sell toys, house ware stuff, baby stuff, etc.,. Have you been to PriceSmart yet? Sometimes its good and other times there is not much on offer, but anyway like you all seem to agree on it is a day out near fast food places! hahahahah

Re:Nacional Supermarket - Santiago - 2007/03/15 08:48 Planning my first Santiago shopping trip for next week so thanks for the tips! Looking forward to some big city shopping and finding some of those food items I've been dreaming of since we moved here. Also some common household items that don't seem so common here in Puerto Plata area.

Someone also told me about a plaza that has an actual food court in it - I may have to have lunch more than once to get my junk food fix. Told the hubby to bring lots of moola - I'm on a mission!!! I'll shop till he drops!

Had a great time checking out the shops. Was just like back home but with a Dominican twist. Found lots of goodies and necessities that I haven't been able to get my hands on in the Puerto Plata area.
And yes, we went to McD's for lunch! My hubby doesn't get it but I had to have the Big Mac. It was just as disgusting as it's ever been but I loved every bite!!!
Well gotta go and stow away all my provisions - think we'll have one of everything for dinner tonite!
